Chapter 554: Bad Omen!
Chapter 554: Bad Omen!
Half a month earlier, the great pirate Barbosa found Obilian and conveyed Henwell's message. He stated directly what Lumir might face next.
He also showed Obilian some evidence proving that Henwell was not merely trying to scare him.
He even gave Obilian a chance to persuade Lumir's decision-makers, but clearly, Obilian failed.
No matter how he warned them, the duchy still walked straight into the trap.
Seeing Obilian fall silent, Barbosa takes out a metal tube sealed with wax.
"This is the letter my lord gave you. It is to be shown to you after your persuasion fails."
Obilian takes the letter tube with suspicion, confirms that the wax seal is correct, then removes the letter and begins reading it.
A moment later, Obilian frowns. "What does Henwell mean by this?"
Barbosa shrugs. "That is not something I know. I have not read the letter."
After saying that, Barbosa turns and leaves, leaving Obilian alone in thought.
That evening, Barbosa slips into Obilian's study.
"Why did you call me here in such a hurry? I have my own mission. I have to leave today."
Obilian, seated before the desk, says, "I will prepare supplies for you, and I will also prepare ships. You can choose the sea route yourself."
Barbosa scratches his head. "No need for you to prepare them. I have already prepared everything. We have our own supply channels."
Obilian takes out the letter from the metal tube he received during the day and hands it to Barbosa. "This is Henwell's request."
Barbosa looks at the letter and shows a surprised expression. Then he solemnly puts the letter away. "Your Highness, I will keep this letter. The markings on it are correct."
"But I originally had a mission. To prevent anyone from accusing me afterward, I have to keep this letter."
After Barbosa leaves, Obilian slumps into his chair and looks up at the ceiling.
In his heart, he sighs at Henwell's brilliance. If someone this clever, powerful, and young survives this trial, who will still be able to restrain him?
If Obilian helps him and later inherits the throne, will he truly have any way to withstand Henwell?
But if he does not help Henwell now, he will not even have the chance to inherit the throne later.
In the midst of melancholy, Obilian cannot help thinking viciously that since Henwell is this heaven-defying, he surely will not live long.
Far away in Peace Haven, Henwell sneezes, frowns at the flower in his study, and says, "This thing smells bad. Change it out."
After guard captain Dalton acknowledges the order, Henwell looks at Chick and the others again. "I do not agree with your plan."
"Elia only just got married. Sending him out now is a bad omen."
"For the matter in the south, Senra can go. He also leads troops, and his loyalty has been tested."
Elia shakes his head. "My lord, it still has to be me. Senra will not do. He is not bad at leading troops in battle."
"But this mission is not simply about fighting. The success or failure of the entire plan is tied to what happens behind it."
"Right now, I am the only one who can free my hands to do this. You know very well that I am the most suitable choice."
Chick also adds, "My lord, you had only just married when you risked your life fighting for Peace Haven. Why should we be any different?"
"This is our shared cause. Peace Haven's survival is not something you alone need to consider. It is the responsibility of every one of us."
Henwell paces around the room, then after a long while looks up at Elia. "Be careful in everything. Just stay behind the scenes."
"Everything must follow the plan. Do not do anything extra. The more you do, the more chances there are for mistakes."
"We trust you, and you should also trust that we can handle things here."
Elia nods. "I understand. I will leave the day after tomorrow."
Henwell curls his lip. "You have not been married for long, and now I am sending you out on a mission. It really is unlucky."
"Damn it. Elia, if the situation looks wrong, run. I will have Orlando take the fleet and operate near the coast, ready to receive you at any time."
"If the plan fails, at worst we hide with our heads down for a few years. But we brothers cannot lose anyone else."
"If you bastard dies, how am I supposed to face your wife?"
Victor and the others laugh. "Do not worry. This guy is the best at staying alive. He will not die."
Afterward, Chick hands over a highly classified document.
This was sent by Henwell's father, Obian. After reading it, Henwell looks around at everyone. "The first step of the plan is already in place."
"Next, the second step is the true priority. If we cannot withstand the joint attack of the three sides, everything afterward will turn into foam."
Arnold, deputy chief of the military general staff, says, "Everything else is manageable. The only difficult part is those knight orders."
"The so-called ace legions are still somewhat inferior to our legions. They are not a threat."
Henwell sighs. "Sigh. There has been too little time. We have only made one thousand Heart-Piercing Lotuses, to be used in the worst-case scenario."
"When the time comes, I will take the Lord Iron Guards and charge the formation head-on. Hopefully we can frighten those precious knight orders."
Chief of the General Staff Rawkins immediately rejects this. "No. My lord, you are no longer a general who should charge into formations."
"Our army already has its own unique fighting will. It already has its own military soul."
"We do not need you, our leader, to personally kill enemies in order to raise morale. On the contrary, if you go onto the battlefield, that will create a negative effect."
Simon steps forward. "My lord, leave it to me. The Cavalry Legion was formed precisely for this moment."
"We are not those delicate noble knights. We exist to charge and kill."
"We consume so much military funding every year not so we can be kept around like precious ornaments."
"If we can bring down an Iron Knight with our charge, then we can also smash those knight orders apart."
Henwell hesitates for a long time before finally nodding with difficulty. "Fine. During this period, you must practice coordination more. Sweat more on the training ground, bleed less on the battlefield."
Henwell agrees for another reason too: he has received a warning from the Western Federation.
He is already an Iron Knight, and according to the continent's agreements, he cannot participate in the battlefield.
If no one attacks him, he can only sit in command.
At present, Henwell still does not want to directly fall out with the Western Federation. Many of his extraordinary resources still have to be obtained from the Western Federation.
For the short term, he still needs to maintain humility toward the Western Federation.
Over the next half month, every side continues moving troops and dispatching commanders.
Before the Midsummer Festival, the armies of every side have already stood facing one another along the border.
Henwell cannot help cursing. This damned festival really is cursed for him.
Every time it comes around, something always has to cause trouble for him.
After he unifies the continent one day, he will definitely abolish this damned festival.
In weather this hot, why not stay home and enjoy the shade? Why run out and join the chaos?
Henwell complains to his wife while teasing his son.
At that moment, guard captain Dalton pushes the door open and enters, bowing to Henwell.
Without Dalton saying anything, Henwell already knows the war has begun.
Otherwise, Dalton would never have entered without knocking. After Melissa fastens Henwell's cloak for him, she watches her husband leave for the battlefield.
